The Beginnings of a Recipe Collection

When I moved to Michigan (from Colorado), I knew about 4 people and one of them was my husband 🙂 I was a newlywed trying to remember how my mom cooked dinner all those years.

After many phone calls, I'd somehow manage to serve dinner for two every night. If you don’t have anyone to call for the perfect Mexican rice this little corner of the internet is where you can find me! I love to share my heritage with you.

how it all STARTED...

I grew up Mexican American. My parents did a wonderful job of embracing American values in a traditional, Mexican household.

As a kid I did not grasp how amazing it was to grow up multicultural. Now that I'm a parent, we love to include both cultures in our family life.

Pass on what truly matters

Now that I have children, and I live far from my family, I tell them stories about my childhood in Mexico and relish in the simpler times. Their little faces light up when they make tortillas, cascarones and try all the Mexican candy. There is so much value in knowing and protecting your heritage.

I hope they come to know it and enrich their lives with all the good things the beautiful people of Mexico have to offer.

Growing Up

My most vivid childhood memories are from dinners at my home and my grandparents house; The little dinner rituals that included running to the corner store to get soda; family stopping by spontaneously, warming up extra tortillas on the comal... Dinner was the time everyone came together for tacos, iced cold Pepsi and family banter.

My weekdays were spending my lunch money on a popsicle or a durito during recess and finding out what mami made for dinner after hours of homework and smelling it as she prepared it. The visits, the conversations, the best parts of my day were always centered around food.

Keeping the Traditions Alive

Because its hard to travel internationally all the time and living so far away from my family, I hope to instill in my children the value of growing up in the richness of their Mexican heritage.

I try to do this by speaking Spanish in our home and including them in all the traditions I remember celebrating as a kid. Having a multicultural heritage is so valuable and we love to learn and have fun with it.

Keeping the Traditions Alive

Cooking rice from scratch is like sending an invite as far as the smell can travel: you are loved here, we’ve been waiting for you: “Ven a comer!” Come and eat!

Back in 2020 I began sharing on Instagram what I cooked for my family from day to day. This Journey started by flipping on the camera during dinner, no script, no recipe, just preparing a meal in real time. I would share memories, culture and short childhood stories.

Friends started asking recipe questions and enjoyed a peek into our family life...so here we are today! Thank you for being here!
